Alma, Quebec: We Are Fighting For Our Jobs!

In a shocking decision in late February 2011, the Quebec Labour Board, that was to make a narrow procedural decision, instead stunned a group of almost 80 employees with a very different ruling.  A ruling that means they have to be fired from their jobs!

The Quebec Labour Board has ruled that by April 23, 2011 the 80 affected employees of the Zellers Carrefour store in Alma Quebec, some of whom have worked at the store since it opened in 1994, are to be replaced by formerly unionized employees from another Zellers (Galeries) that closed in 1995!

Some of the affected employees have a lawyer who needs to file a judicial review in Quebec Superior Court as soon as possible to fight to save their jobs – to challenge this travesty.

The union that represented employees at the closed store has, since 1995, fought a legal war that basically ignored the employees of the Zellers Carrefour store.

In 2000 the Labour Board ruled that union's "certificate" for the closed store was to be transferred to the new store.  But nothing practical was ever done about that.  The union has never met with them; never asked them to sign a union membership card; never called for union dues and never communicated with these employees about the legal battle with Zellers.

Employees of the Zellers Carrefour store are unwillingly caught in a complex legal battle between a big union and a big company.

The 80 employees want their day in court to challenge the union and the Labour Board.  They just want to keep their jobs.  Please give generously.
