What a waste of time and money!

This article, penned by Geoff Matthews in today’s Toronto Star, paints a colourful picture of how our well paid federal politicians have chosen to represent us in Ottawa.

Instead of address issue like the inefficiency of our countries crime labs, sky rocketing gas prices, or the lack of doctors in Canada – Our federal representatives are taking on Hockey Canada, and their decision to name Shane Doan as the national team captain.

That’s right, they are ignoring issues that affect the everyday lives of Canadian’s to question whether or not Mr. Doan referred to another NHL player in an explicit manner – a reference that “disrespects francophones.”

What a complete and utter waste of our hard-earned taxpayer dollars.

RIGHT ON! If they think this is what their constituents want they have a low opinion of them.On the other hand those who would vote for them in the first place, might just be that type. Dave Yalden

EVEN IF SHANE DOAN MADE THE COMMENT ATTRIBUTED TO HIM, WHO CARES? I CAN’T IMAGINE THAT ANY SENSIBLE FRANCOPHONE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SUCH A MILD COMMENT.
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE FRANCOPHONE PLAYERS ON TEAM CANADA REFUSED TO PLAY IF SHANE IS DEMOTED. THAT WOULD BE A CLASS ACT, EVEN THO IT WOULD OPEN US UP TO SOME CRITICISM ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE.

Another farce from the Opposition Parties .
Can you image Gilles Duceppe [ who wants to destroy Canada ] getting up in Parliament to raise a question about Shane Doan’s ALLEGED insult to Quebec. Duceppe who practices insulting the rest of Canada ?
Duceppe and the other Senators and MP’s who are ” investigating ” are utter fools.
I have emailed the chair and cochair of the Committee..how wasteful this is .The answer astounded me …something about “Official Languages ”
At least Senator Mahovolich and MP Dryden agree…it is nonsense .
Only in Canada , you say ?
Pity!

“sky rocketing gas prices”????

It’s the market that determines the price of oil, natgas and gasoline. Surely you don’t want MORE interference by this government in the stock market!

Taxing trusts, eliminating interest deductibility and given foreign investors a free ride by ending tax on interest has surely done enough damage to our market.

This would be really funny if it were not tragic. Our representatives must be kidding -wasting taxpayers dollars, time and insulting our intelligence! Anyone who saw the John Candy comedy “Canadian Bacon” cannot but be reminded of the scene where an American group intent on provoking “war with Canada” crosses the border in a cube van covered with spraypainted insults to the Canadians. They are stopped by the police (Dan Ackroyd) and ordered to rectify the mistake. Given a can of paint, they are compelled not to erase the offensive words but to translate and include them in French language also. ‘Nuf said.

Madam, Sir,
Most of us are angry on our politicians when waisting their and our time pursuing such meaningless issues and at the same time neglecting far more importatn problems relating to Francophones, precisely Acadians on Miramichi NB.
I have just written a letter to Mr. Gilles Duceppe tackling this very issue.

More and more our governments are supporting kangaroo courts. It amazes me that while millions are starved, tortured and killed all over the world, we have a bureacracy whose main concern is “respect” and “feelings” for one minority group; worse, it treats violations of these things as crimes against Canada. Witness the ridiculous investigation by our ex “Officious Language” commissioner Dyan Adam into Don Cherry’s remarks re: French players wearing visors. I’m afraid that this country is so totally out of touch with the world that it ignores real crimes and misery and focuses only the interests of one minority group.

The next time I’m called a tĂŞte-carrĂ©, I’m gonna’ squeal to the government to protect my feelings. Oh, sorry, my complaint is groundless because I am a member of a majority?

The involvement of our elected representatives has no place in hockey. They would be better to involve themselves with issues that matter most to Canadians and that includes the rhetoric we have to listen to on a day to day basis. These people operate like a kindergarten class with all of their no-matter issues. What is wrong wiith discussing hiways and health issues and education which is what they are hired to do. Canadians are getting fed up with their pettiness. Thank goodness for having a PM that would really like to deal with the issues rather than the crap he has to deal with daily.

I think our politicians have no business in hockey. What are they thinking they are part of - a kindergarten class. Stop the rhetoric we have to listen to daily and get down to the issues that matter and what they are elected for. Canadians are fed up with the style of politics that are presented today. What about highways, education, health and welfare. What about all of the money wasted on scandals. I really don’t know how our PM puts up with discussion on non-issues. Maybe it is time we cleaned out the whole works and started fresh with new blood, even a layman could do better. One only has to look at Alberta and although they have a windfall, Klein had the province on the right track immediately - no false promises

I heard the news this morning and could not believe what the lead story was. Fortunately we do have a few sane heads in Parliment as Ken Dryden put the whole issue in context. Not only should we be letting our politicians know how we feel about their behaviour but what about the news media making a story of this issue. They are as much to blame for this as our elected officials. Some politicians will do anything to bring attention to themselves even if they make fools of themselves in doing so and the media accomadates them. Unfortunately our Prime Minister has to put up with this nonsense day in and day out. Let’s hope that common sense will prevail and that our politicians will show a little respect for our parlimentary process and the news media will report on those issues that Canadians really care about..

How insulting.. to have the leaders of this country.. fussing about who will be the team captain.
Next they’ll be out on the lawn in front of the Parliament Buildings.. and concocting a new version of Rover ,, Red Rover, Come over Red Rover..

Do the constituents.. tell the Prime minister - any prime minister who’ll captain the ministry of economics, health, indian and northern affairs, public works.. No!..

There is no room for parliamentarians to be dictating who’ll captain any Canadian Team. This smacks of a very juvenile attempt at democracy.

How sad. How about taking on the gas prices. Something that is in the league of the political arena.

Ken Dryden completely misses the point when he states that our politicians “have the right” to talk about this issue.
The point is whether or not they SHOULD talk about this issue.
The answer is an emphatic “NO !!”
It’s just another cowardly attempt to cater to the francophone voters.
Therefore it trivializes the weightier matters that confront our nation.

Why does Harper have to put up with this sh…..day after day and cannot get on with the important issues that concern good minded, hard working Canadians, like a good Healthcare System, high gas prices, etc. It is just a shame we have a parliment and media outlets printing all this stuff and making news out of it. Where are we headed as a leading nation in world affairs, when we are such a laughing stock for the rest of the world. I am just another disgusted Canadian, and have to take the blame, for stupid uneducated voters to have to listen to such leaders of parties, such as Jack Layton.

Yes, yes, of course this is a waste of time… but there are much bigger issues I am still waiting for the NCC to tackle… like the economic damage that will be done by the government’s new environmental plan, for instance. Or the fact that there were no tax cuts in the last budget!

This is not a Conservative Party organization and they shouldn’t be giving the government a pass just because they’re trying to get a majority.

And “sky rocketing gas prices”?? That is NONE of the government’s business!

If the NCC does not get its priorities straight I’ll be resigning my membership and urging others to do the same until the organization gets back on track.

The only reason this has come up in parliament is because Doan is from western Canada and NO!!! heaven forbid you can’t have a western Canadian representing our Team Canada that plays internationally. The federal opposition parties have shown what THEY are aall about - lack of substance. They all need to be sent to ‘boot’ camp and learn what is important when they represent others (taxpayers) in Ottawa. Our country is lacking political ‘back’ bone and it started with the socialist LIberals who have done nothing progressive for this country in the past 15 years. ANd the NDP which is a nice way to say ‘commmunist’ party is no better. But when our country pays the salaries of ‘federally’ elected representatives who want to break the country - you should not expect much from any party. It appears the Bloc and NDP are on the same bandwagon - attacking Doan for political points. What a joke. Pretty sad lot in Ottawa - the whole bunch!
