Victory for Western Farmers: Supreme Court Ruling on Wheat Board

It was great to see the recent Supreme Court decision on January 22 when they declined to hear an appeal from the Canadian Wheat Board (“CWB”). The CWB had challenged an order from the federal government that had rightly asked the CWB to stop using forced members money to fight CWB political battles. You can read a great article from Kevin Libin from the National Post here to give you more details on this.

The National Citizens Coalition has been fighting for decades against the archaic and undemocratic CWB. We believe Western farmers should have choice in how they market their own private property- their crops! In 2007 there was a vote held by barley farmers and the result was that the majority wanted choice in how they market their crop. Those that want to use the CWB to market their crops could, but those who want to market it themselves would be allowed to do so. The CWB immediately appealed that decision.

It is time that the CWB board finally dealt with the reality. Enough is enough. Give the Western farmers the choice in how they market their crop.  If the CWB was such a great idea- how come farmers in Eastern Canada (who are not part of the CWB) are not rushing to join the CWB- just asking! The answer is fairly obvious.

We will continue the good fight on behalf of hard working Western farmers who want choice in marketing their crops. One of the continuing battles we are going to wage is to open up of the books of the CWB to see where they are wasting millions of dollars of farmers money fighting the very farmers who are forced to belong to the CWB. Now that is an audit that we would like to see Auditor General Sheila Fraser do!

What are your thoughts? As usual your comments are welcome.

Now, this is an excellent idea. (Lets see who runs for cover.)

So it’s finally settled! Maybe now can go after some of the Boards East of Manitoba seizing farmers’ stock and property on spurious pretexts!

We are supposed to be equal right across Canada, but the EAst is far more equal than the rest of the country. The farmers ,in a democratic country HAVE the right to sell their produce at what they want out of it.Each province is Sovereign and we forget that………………..but some are MORE sovereign than others as has been since the beginning of the country.Thats what has to be changed for the WESTern part of this land to be equal in all things in the future. To start with there should be NO EQUALIZATION PAYMENTS TO ANY PROVINCE.Boy that would force Quebec, who get the largest part of it,to finally join Canada.

That’s the crux of the matter. Western alienation begins with Eastern Canada’s treatment of Westerners as “colonials”, not full Canadians, not trusted enough to run our own agricultural industry, without direction from the Great White Father in Ottawa. Add to that the fact we’re still policed by a Federal Force sent to tame the wild frontier, and the condescension of the East become very apparent.

It’s a wonder the directors of the CWB don’t refer to Western farmers as “Wogs”. Good judgement by the SCC for a change.

Gillespie, Stephen says:

O K; What are the salaries of the people that run the wheat board? Could we have those listed from the Top down and how about bonuses, do they pay bonuses. Who hires new people to be on the Board? Any limits on executive positions?. Sounds like a place similar to goverrnment itself! Thanks for answers to above. Stephen Gillespie

J.L.W. says:

This is not the only area of business that needs to be delt with through the courts, for decaids there have been controls enforced upon business and people by the whole bureaucratic bureauracy and it is long overdue to be cleaned up, this will result in certain people having to go out and Work for a living, with their hands instead of,” THINK” they know it all mouths.

Robert Lowes says:

I think the NCC should remind the public that Ralph Goodale was the head of the CWB when some western farmers spent time in jail for selling their crops across the border some years ago! This doesn’t sound like freedom to me!

In the old days of Russia, wasn’t that ‘called collective’ farming ? Why did we look down at Russia while embracing some of its worse principles?

I had a bumper sticker that said it all in redneck Alberta. No Wheat Board, No Kyoto, No Gun Control. Look for the sticker in Ottawa where my car was stolen.

How many business could stay in business if they have to wait 18 months for their money. Even crime wouldn’t pay if it was run by the CWB.

Hey the Wheat board is a Bureaucracy and Bureaucarts will do anything to protect their bailiwick, the wheat board is no different. Take a look at the New York Port Authority no port in NY but the Port Authority owns the World Trade Centre and all of the bridges in NY go figure. Finally a good decision by our Supremes.

Congratulations! - I never thought that the Supremes would have had the guts to make this decision. It has been a long wait. Thank God we have a Conservative government that will not lob obstacles in the way of a progressive judgement. NCC keep up your good work.

I am all for giving Sheila Fraser the job of auditing the CWB. Were I 20 years younger I would offer my services to help her, free of charge. My years of experience as a chartered bank auditor/inspector should help.

Everyone should keep mentioning the name Goodale in connection with everything that is bad and socialist about the Liberals. He is the poster boy for the dregs of the Trudeau age and no one ever seems shout him down.
