Olympic Update

I am sure most of you have spent some time watching various events over the past week or so. There have been many great surprises and lots of tough luck and heartbreakingly close finishes. Kudos to all of the athletes and the hard work they have put in. It has been fun to watch- other than the poor showing by our men’s hockey team last night!

The British media, as they are more than capable of doing, have been relentless in their criticism of the games, they have complained about the weather, the venues and just about everything you could imagine. Maybe they should start complaining about the dreadful showing of their team- they are so far down in the medal count and I believe they just won their first medal over the weekend.

One report that caught my eye was one prepared by Tom Brokaw of NBC News. You can watch it here. This piece was played by NBC during the opening ceremonies telecast. It is a fantastic piece on the history of Canadian and United States and our relationship with each other. Take the time to watch this in its entirety- you will be glad you did. It is oh so refreshing to see such a realistic view of Canada from our neighbor to the south. As a country we have much to be thankful for and this piece puts this into great perspective.

Let us know what your thoughts are after you have watched this.

Jennifer Howse says:

Great video — needs to be replayed widely. Educational publishers (school) should put it on all the CDs accompanying Canadian Studies, Citizenship, and American history courses.

And it wouldn’t hurt for American school publishers to pick it up — widely — too.

Definitely one of the better things to come out of this olympics!

Scurvy Dog says:

Hey guys, This is a Must see video. I think Tom Brokaw does an excellent job on this. The video is impressive and generalizes but also justifies Canada’s place in history in the world.

Americans (and Canadians) should be more informed by this video. There are a few additional facts on Canada that many of us do not know.

I have it running on Twitter. Good job!

Ted Brewer says:

I’m a Canadian, with dual Cdn/US citizenship. My wife Betty is an American with dual US/Cdn citizenship. We have family in both countries and we love both countries, although we often despair of their politicians. Watching that Tom Brokaw video was a real treat and I forwarded it to many of my friends and relatives both sides of the border. Thank you!

John Douglas says:

Tom Brokaw deserves all the kudos we can give him for this great tribute to Canada. Its very stirring to hear. If only every political and regulatory figure in the US would have it brought to their attention.

John Koury says:

Well if the British media don’t like it here the good news is that there is a brand new skytrain across the street from the media centre which runs directly to the airport.

Deborah Patrick says:

Well done, and many thanks for making this available. As an American who has lived in Canada for the past 29 years, I have had to deal with people who just don’t “get it”…on BOTH sides of the border. This was wonderful!

Bob Reid says:

I am impressed with the candor and openness from Tom. This is a great tribute and recognition of our fine country. I live in the US in the winter and find Americans very friendly but my gosh they are ignorant of Canada. I would that this film were shown widely in the US and Canada.

Karen McMillan says:

Hi Peter,

THIS is what every student, in every history class, in every Canadian school, at the beginning of every school year, should view as the introduction to their year of history lessons.

Absolutely brilliantly and beautifully presented.

I, obviously, even before receiving your email and connection to it have been sending it far and wide. Sorry I missed you on the first round!

Mark McCurdy says:

I emailed it to my daughter who teaches the eighth grade here in Ontario.
She’s going to play it for her class.
Perhaps some American eyes will open wider for their northern neighbour.
Well done Mr. Brokaw!

Gerry hutchison says:

I have sent this video to my many U.S. clients. The ones I have heard back from are very positively impressed.
I doubt the teachers will play it for their classes. Canadian history is lacking and particularly anything military. The left and Quebec don’t much care for Canada’s contribution to freedom our military earned for us.

Thanks NCC for publishing the link to this video. NBC did a fantastic job. There is no mention of the many tensions between the two countries, but isn’t it refreshing to view something so POSITIVE? An American-produced video that makes me even prouder to be Canadian…we live in a truly amazing world!

Mr. Stacey English says:

After watching this video I will be even more patriotic to my country. Tom has done a good job of bringing back some history and facts that I have forgotten. I realize and hope that we are partners, and that we can remain together with a border that is now days relatively low security. Thank You for bringing this video to light.

George McCutcheon says:

I saw the British press as represented by reporters unknown to me. I male the other female. I considered what they had to say as very poor reporting and very uninformed. It all spounded like children spewingh out sour apples.

Tom Brokaw, NBC, did an eccelent presentation coverning the Canada, United States of Aamerica relationship. Considering how compressed the presentation was a fair amount of our shared history was tastfully covered. Thank you Tom!

Jack Dixon says:

All very flattering to the Canadian sensibilities but all in all pretty shallow and superficial. He did not attempt to explain the roots of the neighborliness. They lie deep in the legal and literary and parliamentary and military traditions bequeathed to both countries by England.
If the two countries had had, say, one French and one German populations, their histories would have been vastly different-=-and bloodthirsty.
One big American thing : their sports. They are not sports, they are big business. Not sports either, because the only thing is to win, not to do one’s best and to praise the winner for his superior play. Not sport either for the reason that laughable spectacles such as basketball — which is only played by schoolgirls in other parts of the world — are directed and controlled by peopled outside the game. In all British sports, the games are directed entirely by the captain on the field of play, with no outside direction possible. In British sports, players of opposing sides more often than not joke and talk together, and praise each other. In America it appears that players of opposite teams are actually fined if they even talk to each other! Canadians and Americans should take up cricket, and learn what a true sport is, and what it means to say:
“That’s not cricket!”

Since my first post, I am impressed to see every post is a positive one. This is just a 6:16 minute video but catches a glimpse of our two countries and their histories. There is more that could be presented, and perhaps as Jack suggests, explain the roots of the nations.

We could go all out and push for cultural difference but that’s up to Tom Brokaw or anyone else who wants to develop a full blown documentary. If its anything like the video clip, it should sell like hotcakes(with Canadian Back Bacon) and Maple syrup. Educators could pick this up as well.

John says:

The British press could always stay home if they are so disenchanted with everything. The Brokaw clip was excellent . It was a 6+ minute history lesson. I suspect Tom Brokaw andhis staff who put the clip together have a better knowledge of Canadian - US history than most of our high school teachers.

Jim McGibbon says:

A great effort by those concerned with its operations. They had their ups and downs but this was to be expected. At least they bettered Montreal. By the way talking about Montreal the law says English is to be spoken first in
a dual situation but right from the beginning French came first particularly in the opening ceremonies. Over the past few days Francophones have been loud in their complaints re not enough French spoken. How many people in Vancouver would give a damn but Frenchy is not satisfied and never will be satisfied. Out, out, I say!

Dave Goodman says:

I have many good friends and business associates in the USA and also other countries who I thoroughly enjoy. However, I find many are surprised because they initially believe Canada is just America with a different accent and flag and many cannot understand it when we say we don’t wish to become Americans. We are quite comfortable as what we are. Not a negative statement about the States but just the statement that by and large we are comfortable as what we are.
We have an advantage because US television and Radio is available to us
Therefore, we have quite a bit of background on the USA and it history and so we incorrectly think the opposite should be true! However, US history goes back a lot further and Europe history goes back even further than Canadian history. So as the small boy said to his father about his history grades. “well there is so much more history to be learned know than when you were a boy!”
Tom Brokaw does a good job of briefly outlining the positives and the long standing relationship.
Sorry about our and the British soldiers burning down the White-house in the war of 1812. But it great that thereafter, we both managed to resolve differences in a more civilized manner. I hope many in both countries see this video. To again understand how fortunate we both are to have spent the time in benefiting from interlocking economies uninterrupted by wars between us. Hopefully, it will continue like that.

Keith Wallbank says:

It made me proud to be Canadian and again grateful that the US is our neighbour.I wish that more Americans could see this and be better informed on Canada and the relationship between the two countries.
This was an excellent video, well done NBC and Tom Brokaw!
