The National Citizens Coalition hosted receptions in Toronto and Calgary to honour Preston Manning with the 2008 Colin M. Brown Freedom Medal.
Named for the late founder of the National Citizens Coalition, the Colin M. Brown Freedom Medal was awarded to Preston Manning in recognition of his tireless fight for the protection of citizen's rights and a government that is accountable to the taxpayer.
As a constant crusader for smaller more responsible government, Preston Manning has made a remarkable contribution to Canadian politics over the past 40 years. In 1987, Mr. Manning founded the Reform party. This movement of disenchanted western conservatives was in part, opposed to then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's attempt to negotiate a special status for Quebec within Canada. In the years that followed, Manning became leader of Canada's Official Opposition and pressed for new priorities in Ottawa that included relaxed tax barriers, changes to tax rules, cuts to the size of government and the elimination of the federal deficit.
In accepting the Colin M. Brown Freedom Medal, Preston Manning joins a distinguished group of past recipients that includes the Hon. Mike Harris, Thomas Bata, the Hon. Ralph Klein, Diane Francis and the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper.
