Create a Petition

Petitions are a very powerful tool that can be used to communicate with legislatures.

Although not all petitions become law, petitions tabled in the House of Commons become public record and raise awareness of an issue.

Remember these simple steps when creating your petition:

  • Address your petition to "The House of Commons" or to the "Legislative Assembly".
  • Print or type your petition on standard sized paper.
  • Your petition must contain a written request asking parliament to take some kind of action.
  • The written request must be at the top of each page.
  • Each signer must indicate their address.
  • The petition must contain at least 25 signatures.
  • Signatures and addresses must be signed by the original person.
  • Only Canadian residents may sign a petition presented to the House of Commons.
  • The petition can only seek action on a matter within the government's jurisdiction.
