1967 - The Ad that Started it All

In April of 1967 Health Minister John Turner was in London giving a speech to students at the University of Western Ontario. In that speech he talked about the great potential for Canada to provide for its citizens, including a guaranteed annual income.

Disturbed by the potentially negative impact policies such as this would have on Canada; Colin M. Brown prepared this advertisement himself and paid for its insertion. The advertisement pointed out to the Canadian public that in the early 60's government spending rose at a faster rate than that of the US government.  And the Canadian government had no Viet Nam war to fund.

The advertisement invited Canadians, if they shared his concern, to send in donations so that the ad could appear elsewhere.

With this ad, Colin M. Brown struck a cord with many hard working and concerned Canadian. This ad would lead to similar ads placed in dailies across the country and would eventually become the founding of the National Citizens Coalition.
