The mainstream media made a great deal of noise about Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams' decision to seek medical treatment in the United States. It has now become clear, however, that most Canadians do not agree with the venomous position advanced by the media. In a recent poll, only 30% of respondents disagreed with Premier Williams' actions. Interestingly, most Canadians feel this matter should have been handled with much more care, and a greater respect for the privacy and health of Premier Williams. Ouch!

With the Olympics arriving imminently, we all expected our focus to be on the West coast of Canada these days. Unfortunately, the abuse of taxpayers' money by MLA's in Nova Scotia has captured the attention of the entire nation. Revealed today, one MLA who billed taxpayers $8,000 for a new generator was also found to be responsible for an outstanding $3,000 bill for a big screen TV. Ouch!

As the recession comes to a close, after billions in stimulus dollars have been spent supporting the economy and propping up failing industries, Canadians are very wary of additional bail-outs. Ontario's provincial government has just announced $200-million to support Nortel Networks. This announcement was made right on the heels of a by-election announcement, which has led to the charge that McGuinty's Liberals are 'buying votes.' Ouch!

Under a federal program called Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, more than $17-million in grants has been paid out this year to support Quebecois industry and society. This program, which handed out few grants amounting to less than $100,000, is unknown to most Canadians as no other province receives such treatment. One of the recipient companies, Dub Synchro, received $288,000 although no reliable information about the company could be found. Ouch!

The troubles of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL) continued today.  Recent comments from inside the government suggest the entire agency may soon be on the chopping/auction block. This uncertainty has negatively impacted the repair schedule for the Chalk River Reactor, responsible for producing one-third of the world's medical isotopes. The restart of the reactor has now been pushed back to April. This indecision is causing real suffering as Canadians face diminished healthcare services. Ouch!
