Politically interested Canadians have been closely following the bid by Quebecor Media to establish a right-leaning news agency in our country. The yet-to-be-launched SUN TV will provide viewpoints that have certainly been lacking in the milieu of Canada's mainstream news agencies. Critics have embraced the moniker of "Fox News North" for the fledgling start-up - which is a name that SUN TV organizers have not shied away from.

Rather, the organizers behind SUN TV have largely supported this association as they have been very clear about their intentions to bring a similarly controversial news presentation. With Fox News the undisputed ratings king south of the border, SUN TV execs have reason to support this comparison.

Last year, however, Canada's existing news agencies worked feverishly to foment opposition to SUN TV and its mantra. Indeed, much of this opposition centred around Kory Teneycke's role with the start-up news agency. Mr. Teneycke, the former aid and spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper was somewhat of a lightning rod for opposition. Indeed, during his time involved with federal politics, including his work as a lobbyist, Mr. Teneycke earned a reputation as a formidable opponent and an effective force to be reckoned with. It is, perhaps, unsurprising that Canada's established mainstream media would find his entrance into the fray to be unsettling.

At the time, Mr. Teneycke was essentially forced to resign his position with SUN TV, fearing that his continued involvement with the project would endanger its certification and effective launch. Following his departure - and a temporary lull in the battle of rhetoric - SUN TV's license was approved by federal legislators in the final months of 2010.

Now, with all of the i's dotted and t's crossed Mr. Teneckye has resumed his role with SUN TV - they have got their groove back.  Cue the outrage, cue the renewed opposition. Politically motivated Canadians will soon have the option to purchase cable and satellite packages that include SUN TV - it will not be thrust upon anybody, it will be available to those who want it. Really, where is the harm in this?

It is time for a challenge to the left-leaning hegemony in Canada's mainstream media. If our country is, in fact, uniformly left-leaning then our existing media outlets will have no trouble crushing the upstart "Fox News North." If, however, there is a large segment of the population eager for a different take on the news - as I sincerely believe there is - then our mainstream media agencies truly have something to fear.
