NCC Protects Democratic RightsAs Canadians, when our fundamental democratic rights are in jeopardy we can rest assured that the National Citizens Coalition will fight on our behalf. Since the inception of the NCC in 1967, our organization has defended the rights and liberties of all Canadians. Certain governments in Canada's recent past have been all too willing to intrude upon our supposedly entrenched rights. The battle to attain justice, unfortunately, is prohibitively difficult for individuals. The NCC, however, is not afraid to challenge the government over these abuses in order to offer Canadians the protection they deserve. In 2004, the 'Big Brother' tendencies of our federal government were challenged by the NCC, establishing Canadians' right to view election results during the vote. Our freedom of expression during an election is vital to a functioning democracy, and these gag-laws make a mockery of the entire exercise. This is why we also fought, and beat, such gag-laws in BC in 1993 and again in 2000. The NCC takes pride in these hard-earned victories, as well as the legal precedents they have established in Canadian law. Our rights are only established and protected by our willingness to defend them. |
NCC Promotes Workers RightsThrough court battles, media campaigns and direct political action, the National Citizens Coalition has pushed to democratize the workplace. The NCC opposes forcing workers to join unions against their will, which is a practice the courts have continually spoken out against yet unions continue to abuse their position. Furthermore, these forced union dues are increasingly used to fund political campaigns - without the consent of the worker. In these ways, the NCC has countered the political propaganda of union bosses, and we will continue fight on behalf of workers so that their legal rights are both protected and fully understood. |
NCC Opposes Government WasteAs our economy moves out of recession it is more important than ever to spend our tax-dollars wisely. We must invest in our continued growth and prosperity without the burden of wasteful spending. Wasteful spending has a habit of snowballing. As politicians seek to keep their mistakes hidden from the public, more and more money is thrown at poor value endeavours. It is our task as citizens to elect those who we think will spend our tax-dollars most efficiently, yet it is also true that politicians ought to be held accountable; once elected, politicians are not free to 'do as they please.' Our Tales from the Tax Trough is now in its sixth edition, detailing the most egregious and flagrant abuses of our public funds. This publication has been used by citizens and media across the country to assess the performance of government and to identify the specific politicians and bureaucrats that have betrayed the public's trust. The NCC is unwavering in our pursuit of smaller, more accountable government. We have also led the charge against federal MP's 'gold-plated pensions,' and in 1995 we succeeded in pressuring the government to reform the plan. |
NCC Gives Voice for FreedomThrough news releases, letters to the editor and op-eds that have regularly appeared in newspapers like the Globe and Mail, the National Post as well as appearances on radio and TV programs the NCC commands a great deal of visibility in the Canadian political landscape. Since the founding of our organization in 1967 the NCC has built and maintained valuable media relationships, which makes our voice heard in Ottawa as well as provincial legislatures across the country. What makes our voice resonate, however, is our members' input. For this reason, the NCC has become a rallying point for like-minded Canadians seeking responsible government. We are proud of this heritage, and we will continue to position ourselves on the front-lines of developing political issues. Our success in this field is self-evident: when faced with a developing issue, media sources seek OUR opinion. |
NCC Promotes Economic FreedomEconomic freedom is the litmus test for actual political freedom. Despite codified protections of our rights and freedoms as Canadians, economic freedom is something that must be fought for as government intrusions seek to disenfranchise many Canadians freedom. The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) denies western farmers this right by centralizing the procurement and sale of western grain and, in so doing, robs western farmers of hundreds of millions of dollars that they would receive if they sold their grain on the open market. In our ongoing campaign against this injustice, the NCC has already pushed the CWB towards the democratic election of its board of directors. The NCC has also been responsible for the push to privatize certain state-run agencies and companies. This has fostered an environment of economic freedom where subsidy and preferential treatment had once been the norm, such as with Air Canada and Petro-Canada. The NCC is proud to stand for the tax-payer and citizen in this ongoing effort. |
NCC Takes Political ActionThe National Citizens Coalition project group Ontarians for Responsible Government has been credited in playing a large role in defeating the NDP government of Ontario in 1995, which paved the way for the Common Sense Revolution. In 2000 another NCC project group - HELP BC - spearheaded a court challenge against fraudulent government that ultimately played a key role in bringing down the British Columbia NDP. In federal elections the NCC has successfully targeted and defeated politicians who supported election gag laws and gold-plated, taxpayer funded MP pensions. |
